The Gwaelod y Garth Inn sits on the junction of two roads which follow the routes of old trackways which passed through the area several centuries ago. The main road through the village was once an important trackway to Merthyr from Llandaf. The track would have been used by travellers and farmers moving their produce around the area and the inn provided an opportunity to profit from quenching the thirst of weary passers-by.
The establishment of an inn at the junction is shrouded in mystery in respect of the date. The earliest reference we have to an inn on this site is on the 1838 tithe schedule, although it may have existed earlier as an alehouse.
